What does a UGC creator do? A practical starting guide

Understand the work behind creator-produced product videos, from briefing to handoff.

The job is a deliverable

A UGC creator produces content a brand can use, often in a direct, informal style. The work can include concept development, scripting, filming, editing and supplying agreed versions. A large personal audience is not the same thing as production skill, and posting to your own account is a separate deliverable.

Practise with a real object

Choose an item you own and write a brief around one buying question. Film a demonstration, a close-up and a concise explanation. Edit a complete version and then make one alternative opening. Label it as a sample rather than implying the brand hired you.

Agree the handoff

Before accepting a project, define formats, deadlines, review rounds and the scope of use. Clarify whether raw footage, paid advertising use or posting from your account is included. Keep a record of approval and deliver files with unambiguous version names.

Your next brief

Put these decisions in writing before you start production. A short brief gives the creator and reviewer the same standard to work towards. Keep the approved source material with the final file so the next version can build on the work rather than start again.

  • Brief. Define the audience and message.
  • Production. Show the actual product accurately.
  • Handoff. Supply the agreed files and usage context.
